In Pursuit of Curb Appeal

Most people spend their time dreaming up ways to improve the insides of their home. They renovate their kitchens, install new flooring, and paint the walls in vibrant colors. As far as I am concerned, however, the outside of the home is just as vital. After working for years as a landscape architect, I'm passionate about the form and function of yards, porches, decks, gardens, and other outdoor spaces. An inviting exterior welcomes guests to my home and encourages them to enjoy themselves. I decided to create a blog that would extol the virtues of curb appeal—and maybe inspire you to take your homemaking efforts outside.

Installing A New Deck On Your Property

The addition of a deck to your property can be a major upgrade. In addition to this upgrade having major impacts on the appearance of the property, it can also have practical benefits as well as its own maintenance requirements.

How Can You Reduce The Amount Of Maintenance That The Deck Will Require?

Your choice of material for the deck will be one of the most important factors in determining its maintenance requirements. When individuals choose wood for their decks, they will have to commit to following all of the maintenance requirements for outdoor wood. Otherwise, their new deck could develop rot and discoloration that may render it unsightly and unsafe. If your goal is to minimize the amount of maintenance that the new deck will require, you should be prepared to give considerable thought to the material that is used in constructing the deck. Vinyl can be one of the least maintenance intensive materials to use in your deck due to its ability to resist weather-related damage.

Does The Color Of The Deck Have Practical Impacts?

The materials that are used in the construction of the deck will not be the only practical consideration. Individuals will often neglect the importance of the color of the deck. When homeowners choose a deck with dark colors, it can become extremely hot due to absorbing heat from the sun. This can make the deck less comfortable to use, and it may also increase the wear that it sustains. Opting for a deck that uses a neutral or light color will minimize these effects as these colors will reflect the sunlight. If you are opting for vinyl decking, you will need to choose light colored vinyl when the deck is being installed. For wood and other materials, you may be able to effectively paint them to change to the color.

How Long Can You Expect The Process Of Installing A New Deck To Take?

Installing a new deck will be a project that can take up to a couple of weeks to complete. The amount of time can vary in response to the size of the deck being built as well as the condition of the soil. When the soil where the deck is being installed is loose or unstable, stabilization will be necessary before the deck can be installed. Stabilization work can add several days to the installation work, but it will be necessary to ensure the deck will be stable once it is complete.
